    Product OverView

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens from Nikon is a fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR. The combination of its mid-range telephoto design and a fast f/1.8 aperture make it an excellent option for shooting both still images and HD video in low light scenarios. Available light shooters will love the wide-open effect when shooting intimate portraits; in-focus subjects will stay sharp, while distracting backgrounds will melt into a pleasing soft blur. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers an apparent focal length of approximately 127mm.

The lens boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won’t alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. The Silent Wave Motor utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation.

When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. The M/A mode switch offers a seamless override of the AF system with practically no time lag at all! Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC) improves light transmission and provides better color consistency and minimized flare.

The AF-S 85mm f/1.8 is lightweight, fast, and easy to tote around. Weighing in at 8.0 oz less than the venerable 85mm f/1.4 – shooters that favor prime lenses can toss this optic in their gear bag without hesitation – it’s small enough and light enough to take along everywhere!

  • Fast, compact FX-format prime medium telephoto lens. Fast maximum aperture is great for capturing stills or HD video in low light situations, and for head and shoulder portraiture, weddings and concerts
  • Take flattering portraits under all lighting conditions: Great for studio, on-set or available light shooting, as well as capturing still images or HD videos of subjects with attractive skin tones and producing beautiful background blur. When you want to isolate your subject from the background in indoor or outdoor photography, this lens renders a gorgeous natural background blur (Bokeh) at the wider aperture settings
  • Though optimized for FX-format DSLR cameras, the lens is equally adept at serving any Nikon DX-format DSLR. When mounted on a DX-format DSLR, this 85mm prime delivers a 35mm focal length equivalence of approximately 127mm
  • Boasts Silent Wave Motor technology (AFS) and Internal Focus for fast and quiet autofocus that won’t alter the length of the lens, thus preserving working distance throughout the focus range. Internal optical movement is restricted to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel, enabling smaller, lightweight construction and closer focusing distance. SWM utilizes ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations instead of a gear system to focus the lens, converting traveling waves into rotational energy, thus offering beautifully smooth, silent and accurate autofocus operation. Enjoy sharp, clear image quality at all apertures
  • When fine manual focusing is required, just rotate the lens focus ring. M/A mode enables you to seamlessly override the AF system with practically no time lag at all, even during AF servo operation and regardless of which AF mode is in use!
  • Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC) is a multi-layer lens coating that improves light transmission, provides better color consistency, and minimizes ghost and flare to a negligible level. Enjoy reduced reflection in the wider wavelength range and exceptional color balance and reproduction
  • Rounded 7-blade diaphragm that creates a gorgeous natural background blur (Bokeh) at the wider aperture settings

Sharp as a Razor! Impressive bokeh.

This is an excellent lens! I will note that I calibrated the lens to my Nikon D750 camera using a paper calibration tool with a ruler (tick marks) to ensure it wasn't focusing in front of the center or behind it. In my case, it focused behind the center (i.e. the number -2 was sharper than 0). I modified the camera settings to correct that, saved the settings for this lens, and it's spot-on. Everyone should learn how to do that (youtube to start) because there are many lenses and many camera bodies. Think about trying on a suit. Are the sleeves perfect, or does the coat need alterations? That's my point. The suit was made for a manikin, not you. Each lens most likely needs calibrating (i.e. alterations).Read full review...

Warranty only works in Japan !! They only forgot to mention it!! Scam

I bought this lens 2 months ago, I used it for one week and it stopped working. As soon as I was back in the US I brought it to a Nikon store to fix it by using the "One Year Worldwide Warranty" included in my purchase, but they told me that the warranty they gave me only works in Japan so I had to pay the full price. Buy it somewhere else , not worth the $20 savings. Extremely disappointed.Read full review...

Lightweight with great optics

This is a light lens with incredible optics on DX cameras. I assume the optics would be better on full frame due to less cropping of the image, but on crop sensors, this lens is tack sharp all throughout the image, with no vignetting or distortion. The autofocus is fast, but nothing to write home about. Coming from a 35mm 1.8G, the mechanics on this lens feel incredible. The focusing ring is smooth, unlike the plastic gear-grind feel I get from my 35mm 1.8G. If you're looking for a good first portrait lens for both FX and DX cameras, I would highly reccomend this.Read full review...

Decent Lens

I've been a photojournalist since the mid 1970's and I still prefer my Nikon F 35mm over any DSLR. However, film and processing is expensive so I'm stuck. This f1.8 lens is nice but remember it is a single focal length, which I prefer to a zoom. I like the A/M focus feature and the wide aperture. As a Nikon purist I'm used to my Nikon products being made in Japan. This lens comes from China. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."Read full review...

Awesome lens! Poor body construction.

Upon receiving this badboy, I immediately mounted this on my D750. Im amazed by the images this thing can produce. Your subject in focus will everything looks creamy. My only gripe is that the body feels flimsy as its made of plastic unlike other lenses of the past. My guess is to cut down on weight. But overall image quality, i love this lens.Read full review...

Great lens for portrait and money

Overall i really satisfied it. Not so expensive. One of the most good thing is weight.

Only the one thing that inconvenient is aperture. It is not circular aperture, so the picture's light expression is not so fantastic. But Overall that is really great lens.

Price - 5 stars
Weight - 5 stars
Function - 5 stars
F/stop - 4.5 stars

A must have for portraits!

This lens is fantastic for portraits as well as general photography in low light. As a full frame lens, it is 85mm on a full frame body, but it is 127mm F2.7 on a crop sensor body like the D5500 for example.
I use it on the FF D800 and the APS-C D7000 and the results are absolutely stunning.

Highly recommended.

PS - The D5500 doesn't have an internal motor for the Auto Focus, so on the D5xxx cameras you'll need to use this lens manually.

Beyond pleased with my purchase (Nikon 85mm f/1.8g)

First of all... I'm not a professional photographer. I'm a newbie to all of this dslr stuff, so my knowledge of what is and isn't quality gear isn't that vast in comparison to the more advanced photographer. HOWEVER, I know enough to appreciate the clarity and sharpness this lens has added to my photos -VS- the kit lens I'd been using since purchasing my Nikon D3300 (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6). Even though I'm still a big fan of my kit lens, adding the 85mm f/1.8g to my bag has not been a disappointing move for me at all. It's lighter that I thought it would (because I read that it was heavy in other reviews), but even when attached to my camera body it still doesn't feel like it's weighing me down after hours of walking around - which is great for me. Oh... and did I mention that the photo quality this baby produce is INSANELY GOOD?!... well... IT IS! I bought mine on ebay at a great price (open box) and I am beyond pleased with my purchase, so if you don't have this lens in your bag you should really do yourself a favor and GET IT TODAY!Read full review...

Great Versatile Lens

Great lens for the price for both portraits and landscape photography. Takes very sharp photographs. Very lightweight so great for travel. Has a solid feel although time will tell if it will last the test of time. My only complaint is that Nikon has made each of their 1.8 G Prime lens with a different filter size. 58mm , 67mm, 72mm, 77mm- seriously? That is fine for a dedicated UV filter on each lens ...but for ND and CPL filters...not so much since you need to mess with either more dedicated filters or converters. And lens hoods do not play well with filter converters.

But the photos are awesome and that is what really matters. Birthday photo at 1/200 @ f1.8 with fill flash. Landscape was shot at 1/200 @ F16. Both on a Nikon D600 full frame.

Perfection!!!!!

The Older AF-D Version has been my favourite-favourite lens for many years. This newer updated version is SUPERB!!!! Only complaint would be the cheap built quality in which both Nikon & Canon have been digressing to respectively. Otherwise a PERFECT LENS!!!!Read full review...

85mm

This lens is very sharp and fast and I can use it in low light without a flash. It is taking a little getting used to the distance I need from the subject without being able to zoom. I highly recommend this lens.Read full review...
